KT 5G: A Sculptural Ode to Connectivity

TIST's Award-Winning Design Symbolizes the Power of 5G Technology

The inspiration for KT 5G came from the duo's distinctive style of expression. TIST sought to create a design that would clearly communicate the features of 5G services, using the duo's vibrant colors and patterns. The result is a dynamic sculpture that reinterprets 5G technology's global connectivity through modern symbols such as drones and autonomous driving. Various arrow images further express the concepts of speed and data flow.

Creating the sculpture was a technical challenge, as it required the organic combination of structures over 3 meters high. The team bent and welded steel plates to create the unique form, spending considerable time masking the changing parts of each color. Despite the simplicity of the structure, the team's dedication to expressing the sculpture's unique form is evident.

The sculpture is more than just a visual treat; it also serves a functional purpose. Small sculptures double as benches, providing a resting space for the public. Alongside each sculpture, a POP describes the meaning of the service, allowing the public to understand KT's 5G service in an artistic context.

The project, which began in October 2018, was a new challenge for TIST. The team had to design a sculpture that would effectively represent a service that was not yet commercialized and unfamiliar to the public. They studied KT's 5G service and designed scenes that would effectively showcase the service. The team chose to reconstruct and redesign these scenes using Craig & Karl's expression style, resulting in a customer-friendly expression.

The KT 5G sculpture is a testament to TIST's innovative approach to design. It not only represents the power of 5G technology but also serves as a functional and engaging public space. The design's success is evident in its recognition, having been awarded the Silver A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2020. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and KT 5G certainly fits the bill.
